Institute for Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics (INPA) at LBNL

The INPA Seminar weekly talks are on Fridays, starting at 12:00 pm, unless informed otherwise. The seminar talk starts with a brief presentation of the weekly scientific news. Typically, the talks conclude by 1:00 pm. The seminars are held in the Sessler Conference Room,  located in Bldg. 50A- 5132.

VIRTUAL INPA SEMINAR – Eric Charles (Stanford) – Friday, May 22, 2020

May 22, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Speaker: Eric Charles (Stanford)
Title: Indirect Dark Matter Detection: Status and Summary of WIMP Searches

Abstract:
The nature of dark matter is a longstanding enigma of physics; it may consist of particles beyond the Standard Model that are still elusive to experiments. Searches for signals from the annihilation or decay of weakly interacting massive particle (WMIP) dark matter using observations of the gamma-ray sky have come to prominence over the last decade.    Current and upcoming telescopes such as the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) and the Cerenkov Telescope Array are particularly well suited for searching for products of the interactions of dark matter particles.  In this talk I will describe astrophysical targets studied for evidence of dark matter, and review the status of these searches.  I will also discuss the factors that determine the sensitivities of these searches, including the magnitudes of the signals and the relevant backgrounds, considering both statistical and systematic uncertainties.  Finally, I will discuss how upcoming observatories operating across the electromagnetic spectrum could change this field.
