Institute for Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics (INPA) at LBNL

The INPA Seminar weekly talks are on Fridays, starting at 12:00 pm, unless informed otherwise. The seminar talk starts with a brief presentation of the weekly scientific news. Typically, the talks conclude by 1:00 pm. The seminars are held in the Sessler Conference Room,  located in Bldg. 50A- 5132.

VIRTUAL INPA SEMINAR – Hao Chen (Texas A&M University)

July 17, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Speaker: Hao Chen (Texas A&M University)

Title: Two New Cryogenic Detector R&D

Abstract: It is well-accepted that the majority of the matter in the universe is dark and non-baryonic. The nature of dark matter, however, remains mysterious. Various proposed candidates span a wide range in the mass and cross section parameter space. Many experimental efforts have been made aiming to detect dark matter particles directly, part of the region in the parameter space has been excluded from their data. Probing the lower mass region requires a low threshold detection technique. I will talk about two new cryogenic detectors that are currently under development. The magnetic bubble chamber utilizes a single-molecule magnet as the target, amplifying the signal from a scattering event by magnetic avalanches. The phonon-mediated high-voltage detector combines features of CDMS iZip and HV detector, provides a possible way to achieve a low threshold without losing the electron recoil/nuclear recoil discrimination.
